Colorado folk-punk band Doom Scroll has released the new single, “Zugzwang.” The song is the latest track from the band’s forthcoming album, Exhausted Dialogue, out October 6.

“The term ‘Zugzwang’ comes from chess and means that whatever your next move is, it will inevitably put you in a worse position, and ultimately you’ll lose the game,” explains vocalist and guitarist Elliot Lozier. “Such is the game of war. We disconnect ourselves from war and take sides based on what the media tells us. It’s easy to generalize a group of people and cast judgment while we sit in the comfort of our couches. All the while, innocent people get caught in the crossfire as two sides fight and die for people who would never lift a finger for them. It’s a never-ending cycle of glorified violence and meaningless death that ultimately puts humanity in a worse position.”

“Zugzwang” follows “The Ravine,” a song inspired by the long and often unbelievable run of bad luck the band endured while touring and recording. Both tracks will appear on Exhausted Dialogue, Doom Scroll’s first full-length since 2021’s Immoral Compass.

Formed in 2020, Doom Scroll brings together vocalist and guitarist Elliot Lozier (We the Heathens, Pesky Self, Atrocity Solution, Escape From The ZOO), vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Taylor Dittman (Broken Bow, Hermit Stew), bassist Micah Butler (Chatterbox and the Latter Day Satanists, Helga Pataki), guitarist and producer Jon Pizarro of Dead Work, and drummer Marissa Sendejas (Chad Hates George, formerly of Days N Daze).

Lozier and Pizarro recorded Exhausted Dialogue in their bedrooms, continuing the band’s DIY approach. The album was mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Jason Livermore, whose credits include Propagandhi’s Supporting Caste, NOFX’s Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing and The Suicide Machines’ War Profiteering Is Killing Us All. Ian Cook of Larry and His Flask also appears on the track “Horsemen.”

“Exhausted Dialogue is an album about internal and external struggle,” Lozier says. “Rarely do we find any kind of reprieve when facing these struggles, and it felt like we were beating a dead horse by singing about these topics again and again.”

Doom Scroll are currently touring the U.S. with Hans Gruber and the Die Hards in support of Exhausted Dialogue, with Richard Thomas joining them on drums. Hans Gruber and the Die Hards will appear through September 10. The September 11 show in Denton and September 12 show in Oklahoma City will feature Doom Scroll only.

The band will return to the road in October for dates through the Midwest and Southeast, concluding October 25 with an early performance at FEST in Gainesville, Florida.
